Dental X-Rays

Dental X-Rays in North Central San Antonio

Dental X-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools, providing valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Taken using low-level radiation, they capture images of the interior of the teeth and gums. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities, and create an accurate care plan. Without X-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

What to Expect

Dental X-rays are typically performed yearly. They can happen more often if the dentist is tracking the progress of a dental problem or treatment. For new patients, dental X-rays give Dr. Lazor a clear picture of your dental health.

While dental X-rays do involve radiation, the exposure levels are so low they’re considered safe for children and adults. If the dentist uses digital X-rays instead, the risks from radiation exposure are even lower.

Precautions are taken to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental X-rays. We place a lead apron over the chest, abdomen, and pelvic region to prevent any unnecessary exposure to vital organs. Women who are pregnant or believe they may be pregnant should avoid all types of X-rays.

Dental X-Rays May Reveal

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line
Children may need more frequent X-rays to monitor the growth of their adult teeth. Detecting and treating dental problems at an early stage can save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and your teeth!

Types of X-Rays

Types include bite-wing, occlusal, panoramic, periapical, and extra-oral. A dental hygienist guides the patient through the process, which is quick and painless. If any problems are discovered, the dentist will discuss care options with the patient.

A full mouth series of dental X-rays is recommended for new patients, and is usually good for three to five years. Bite-wing X-rays are taken at check-ups, and are recommended once or twice a year to detect new dental problems.
